Hidden Gaming Secrets
How well do you really know your favourite game? You might consider yourself a fully qualified expert. You have completed it on every difficulty, you can stamp your dominance on any multiplayer match, and you could even pen a blow-by-blow analysis on the game from memory. But games are a dizzying labyrinth of secrets, tricks, and homages, all rewards for those who have the time and the skill to seek them out. Here are some of the best secrets for the biggest games around. Can you hunt down these awesome hidden extras for yourself?
The Last Guardian
Unlock costumes from Ico and Shadow of the Colossus
There are hidden costumes dedicated to the developer’s previous games, Ico and Shadow of the Colossus. You can unlock them only when playing through The Last Guardian for a second time, though. The Ico costume, Horned Apparel, will appear in options after feeding 48 barrels to Trico. Regardless of how many barrels you find, Trico himself will proudly display a Badge of Honour medallion on your second playthrough.
The Wonderful 101
Hidden taunt move
If you really enjoy showing off, you will be glad to hear that there is a hidden taunt move in The Wonderful 101, which boosts your attack power considerably. Stand still in front of an enemy and hold down the X and A buttons at the same time. Taunting also allows you to create a Unite Camp immediately by pressing the Y button, which refills the Unite Gauge.
World of Final Fantasy
Finding the Phoenix
In Valley Seven, you will find a Murkrift in Cauldron 3, next to a gaping chasm of lava. You will need to use three Mirages with Fire Resistance of at least 150 for this puzzle – Fritt, Bomb and Ifrit all work here. Solving the puzzle opens up a protruding rock that allows you to cross the gaping chasm safely. You will find the Phoenix waiting for you in the cave on the other side.
Towerfall Ascension
Unlock the secret archers
There are four secret archers to unlock – Cyan, Purple, White and Yellow. To unlock Cyan, clear Sunken City in story mode. For white, you need to play the Moonstage during VS until the purple crystal appears, so you can shatter it. To unlock Yellow, collect all seven yellow gems in Trial Mode, then head to Tower Forge 2. Head below the first dummy you see on the right on that map. Purple is the only tricky archer to unlock, since you need to keep playing on Twilight Spire until a random event unlocks him.
Splatoon
Explore Sunken Scrolls secrets
Sunken Scrolls throughout the game let you know about the world and history of Octo Valley. But they have another secret too. See the doodle in the bottom right? Quickly scroll through the pages and you will realise it is a flipbook animation!
Octodad: Dadliest Catch
Find the game that’s not quite Minecraft
When you are taken by the family to Gervason’s Grocery, head to the back of the store and look at the stand by the right-hand wall, tucked away in the corner. There is a MINTCRAFT stand there, which is an obvious homage to Minecraft. Pick up the Creeper head and it will glow red before disappearing into a puff of smoke!
